Assessment / FAQ's

What is a Psychoeducational Evaluation?

A psychoeducational evaluation assesses a student's cognitive processes (e.g. attention, memory, language), academic skills (e.g., reading, writing, math), and social, emotional and behavioral functioning.

Psychoeducational evaluations can identify and document the information processing dysfunctions found with LD and ADHD that significantly negatively impact on academic achievement.

Psychoeducational evaluations are conducted for reasons such as

    a.   pinpointing where the breakdown in a student's learning is
            occurring
     b.   understanding a student's learning profile
     c.   verifying a diagnosis of a learning disability and/or ADHD

d.   creating individualized learning plans
     e.
determining eligibility for special educational services
     f.
determining eligibility for accommodations/modifications in the
             classroom
     g.
determining eligibility for test accommodations on
            standardized examinations
(e.g., SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT,
            MCAT, LSAT)

What age students do you evaluate?

I evaluate students ages 6 to adult.

How long does a psychoeducational evaluation take?

The time required for a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation is approximately 8-12 hours and often is scheduled over a two-day period.

What information will you need from me prior to testing?

Your child's academic records, prior testing, standardized test scores, and developmental/social/medical/school history, along with any relevant information (e.g., schoolwork samples).

Why should high school students have a new psychoeducational evaluation before college?

In order to access services at college under 504 Disability Law, students must have a current evaluation (within three years).  In addition, all universities have a learning center that offer varying levels of support.  In order to utilize a university learning center, they require a current psychoeducational evaluation and other documentation of a disability.  This will allow students to have various accommodations (e.g., extra time on testing, proof reading papers, ability to tape record classes, note takers for classes, etc.).

Do I have to tell a college that I have a disability before I am accepted?

No, you do not.  It is important to contact the college learning center before school starts even if you don't think your child will utilize it.  This is a good idea just in case your child needs support during their college career.

How long does it take to get the results?

The final written report takes approximately 2-4 weeks from the date of the final test session.

How much does a psychoeducational evaluation cost?

The cost of a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation is approximately $2500.  However, costs vary depending on the evaluation and services needed.

Do you take insurance?

No, I do not accept insurance.  Most insurance companies generally do not provide reimbursement for diagnoses of learning disorders and/or testing that is considered educational in nature.  However, I will be happy to provide you with an invoice that you can present to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.  This invoice will include diagnostic and procedure codes.
